Can people give it up? |

I spent some time yesterday talking about strengths and how great managers link strength to performance. The discussion was about how a great manager can be interested and attentive to performance, pushing where necessary, reassuring and supportive when needed.
But very quickly the cries of 'micro-management' and 'command and control' went up. And, as the discussion progressed, a couple of things became clear:
1) Discussion of performance management had got an almost political correctness filter attached to it - a filter that said discussion of performance should always be punitive.
2) That a Manager hasn't got the right to know what his/her people are doing.
As you can guess from those two bullets, this was a deeply weird conversation. It may be isolated to the team in question, however I suspect not. Truly a Theory X view of the world in action - and it's not that often that it gets so overt.
Weird.
