What a joy it was to share a little of Shen and Zhao's journey to olympic gold in the Pairs Skating. at 31 and 38 respectively, these 'over-the-hill' skaters really had no right to expect gold, yet they entered as favorites and, from the short program on, showed what focus, commitment and performance are all about.
Here's a married couple who sequestered themselves in single-sex dorms to ensure focus on one thing and one thing only - olympic gold. Here's a coach who has hardly seen his son for 20 years for one thing only - to build an ice skating program of which China could be proud (his own strengths springboard, you might say!)
Shen and Zhao's celebration upon hearing that they had won was honest, heartfelt and joyous.
